40 Awesome Tips For Strong Shiny Hair

Flowy hair

When we are young, we tend to forget about the importance of our hair and abuse it with all kinds of chemicals and artificial hair treatments, be it hair gels, flat irons, blow dryers etc. But as well age, we soon realize that we need to stop or at-least reduce doing this and start to take more care of our hair for it to remain healthy and beautiful.

So here are some tips that I use to ensure that my hair remains healthy. Following these tips can help your hair look and feel healthy, considerably reduce hair fall, reduce dullness, increase shine, increase thickness and stop thinning and breakage. So here goes:

1.) Avoid Over-Using Heat Appliances

Over usage of flat irons and rollers can result in hair fall, hair thinning, dryness and split ends to name a few. So do not use them on a daily basis and use a heat protector whenever you expose your hair to these appliances. You need to give your hair at-least 5 to 6 days time to recuperate after every use.

2.) Wash Hair on Alternate Days

If possible Wash your hair every other day or around 3 to 4 times a week. Washing hair too often can result in the natural oils being drained which can lead to dryness and breakage. Use a shower cap if you are in the habit of taking multiple baths a day.

3.) Reduce Shampoo Usage

Use shampoo once or twice a week at the most. Avoid using store brought shampoos on a daily basis.

4.) Switch Over to Sulphate Free, Organic Shampoos

Buy shampoos that are sulphate and paraben free. Sulphate is a chemical which is used in shampoos to produce form; so if your shampoo produces a lot of foam, it is probably not good for you as sulphate has been known to damage hair over the long run.

There are many organic brands like for example, the Suave Almond and Shea Butter shampoo and the Creame of Nature Argan Oil Moisture and Shine shampoo and Yes to Carrots to name a few. And also with a bit of research, you can make your own shampoo at home!

5.) Avoid Artificial Hair Products

Hair products such as hair gels contain silicones that are very hard to remove using organic shampoos. To remove these silicones, you will need to use harsh shampoos that can damage your hair over time. It’s like a bad cycle and I learnt this the hard way. So try and reduce your usage of such products or research organic alternatives.

6.) Avoid Bleaching

Bleaching your hair too often, like every month is a sure shot way of making your hair dry, brittle and damaged. If you care for your hair, avoid bleaching altogether or at-least reduce it.

7.) Try Natural Hair Coloring Over Artificial

If you did not already know, you can color your hair in all sorts of different shades using natural products like coffee, henna, lemon juice, honey etc. For example, honey can be used to lighten hair and henna can give your hair a red shade. Here’s a video explaining how you can use henna to get a red shade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nunoAESTFyw. Yes it’s not for everyone cause the results are not always the same for all hair types, but it’s worth giving a shot.

8.) Avoid Using Body Soaps to Clear Hair

It goes without saying that soaps are not meant to clean hair. But just putting it out here just in cause some of you use soaps on your hair.

9.) Massage Scalp While Bathing

While bathing use your fingers to massage your scalp. This will help clean the scalp and also stimulate blood flow that will help hair grow stronger.

10.) Comb it up

Regular combing can aid faster hair growth by stimulating your scalp. And yes, this works only when you are combing the hair in your scalp area. Avoid combing when your hair is wet.

11.) Use a Wooden Brush/Comb

Wooden combs generally have rounded teeth which gently massage and stimulate the scalp giving you shiny and healthy hair. In addition to that, they are anti-Static, wide, durable and less likely to break which can help in hassle free combing. As mentioned above, just make sure not to use wooden combs on wet hair.

12.) Use Wider Combs

If your hair gets tangy avoid using a brush and instead try using a wide toothed comb.

13.) Trim Your Dead Ends Regularly

If you have long hair, trimming your hair every one or two months can help get rid of split ends and also aid hair growth. You can easily do this at home. Here’s a video explaining how to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um1hqXh7-cc#t=185

14.) Make it a Habit to Towel Dry Your Hair

Blow dryers no matter what they claim can make your hair dry which in turn leads to you needing to use products to soften it. I highly recommend ditching the blow dryers and going back to the towel.

If that’s not your thing, give the hair diffuser a try. Hair diffusers cause a lot less strain on the hair as compared to a conventional hair dryer.

15.) Learn to Towel Dry Properly

Wet hair is prone to breakage, so avoid those vigorous movements while you towel dry. Instead, start by gently massaging your scalp with the dry towel and then when you get down squeeze and let the towel absorb the excess water. You can then wrap the towel around your hair while you get ready. Here’s a video explaining how to towel dry properly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WJXwVxN7Wc

16.) Use a Separate Towel for Your Hair

Bath gels or soaps that you use while bathing can still leave residue on your skin and if you the same towel you used to clean your body on your hair, that’s going to transfer those oils on to your already clean hair. So if possible, use two towels, one for your body and one for your hair.

17.) Super Absorbent Towels

Although I have never used these, I have heard good things about these towels. So if you have long hair and have trouble using a regular towel, consider giving these a try. One of the popular ones with many positive reviews is Turbie Twist.

18.) Oil After Wash

If your hair gets really dry after a bath, apply a light coat of coconut oil, olive oil or shea butter (careful with this, since it can be heavy) to smooth, de-frizz, and moisturize your locks. The oil will give some shine and, if you have wavy hair, create natural, air-dried curls.

19.) Apply Oil Overnight

Apply a light coat of natural oil to your hair if not daily at-least once a week. Gently massage the oil to your scalp. You can even do this overnight if you don’t like going out with oil in your hair.

20.) Stimulate Blood Flow to Your Hair

Scalp massage is the best way to stimulate blood flow to your hair follicles. If you are feeling too lazy have your boyfriend massage your scalp for you :).

Another method is to lightly tug on your hair. Get your hand firmly in and grab a whole bunch of hair from near your scalp and lightly tug on it. This is sure to get the blood flowing in that area and it feels very relaxing too. So if you have not tried it already, give it a go. I have a feeling, your bf would love doing this for you too :).

21.) Apply Oil Before Shampooing

23.) Hot Oil and Hot Towel Treatment: Hot oil treatments can be done once or twice a month and are extremely beneficial to hair health. They make the hair stronger and increase growth. Here’s a simple way you can do this at home:

  • Warm the oil (coconut or olive oil) by placing it in a bowl of hot water
  • Part your hair and start applying the heated oil on the scalp and massage evenly all over.
  • Once done, twist your hair and wrap using a shower cap or saran wrap.
  • Now wet your towel, put it in the microwave for about a minute and a half.
  • Take the hot steam towel and wrap it around your shower cap.
  • Leave it on for 30 mins after which you can shampoo your hair.
